Promoting Tolerance and Diversity | | - Developed the innovative Commission for One California to address issues
of race, tolerance and diversity. The Commission holds regular hearings to discuss key topics, such as racial profiling by law enforcement, diversity in the media, teaching tolerance in schools and environmental justice. - After the September 11th terrorist attacks, Bustamante led an outreach effort to
Sikh and Arab- American communities to help maintain peace between communities. - Led the effort to drop the state’s appeal in defense of Proposition 187, and
proposed a solution that mirrored the final settlement agreed to by all of the parties involved. - Traveled to Israel in 1999 and met with leaders involved
in the Middle East peace process to participate in the challenges of promoting peace in a diverse community. - Hosted the Capital Consultation for Tribal Governments of California in
February 2000, establishing dialogue between state and federal officials and California’s tribal leaders on issues other than gaming. The representatives from more than 80 tribes discussed health care, youth and education issues. - Successfully sponsored legislation (SB 41 - Alpert) to create a new model K-12 school
curriculum regarding California Native American history and culture. - Involved in the partnership through which copies of the film, Farewell to
Manzanar, about the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, are being distributed to public schools and libraries. - Sponsored legislation, (SB 1771 - Alarcon), to help create a "Diversity Institute"
within the University of California system.
